Nature and Cooperation

Taiwan yuhinas (pictured) are a joint-nesting species of birds where group members within a nest are unrelated. Shen et al. show that unfavourable environmental conditions reduce social conflict and make the birds more cooperative, a strategy that results in higher offspring survival. Pic Source  Internet

Space Spiral and a Beautiful Starry sky

An unusually "perfect" cosmic corkscrew surrounds the binary star system LL Pegasi in a new   Hubble Space Telescope   picture released this week. Take a look !  Isn't this is coooool :)  Astronomers think t he spiral's evenly spaced rings are being created because one of the stars in the binary pair is dying. Unlike more massive stars that end their lives in explosive   supernovae , LL Pegasi is quietly shedding its outer layers of gas and dust to form what's called a planetary nebula. The dying star itself is still hidden by a dusty cocoon. But it's ejecting material at about 31,000 miles (50,000 kilometers) an hour, the researchers calculate, forming a new ring in the spiral every 800 years - wow! Oh! and for the star gazers,  for the next week or so sky-watchers in the Northern Hemisphere will have the chance to see an elusive celestial pyramid known as the zodiacal light.  False Dawn or  Zodiacal Light or what-so-ever.. this pic is just amazing! the

snowpocalypse and snowmageddon

via earthobservatory.nasa.gov Nicknamed “snowpocalypse” and “snowmageddon,” an exceptionally severe winter storm dropped several feet of snow around the Washington, D.C., area in early February 2010. Crashed and abandoned cars littered roads as airlines canceled hundreds of flights. Even the DC Metro train system stopped functioning in places. I like it too

House on tree or tree on house

Now thats a coolio retreat - right on top of a tree ! Just look at this design! Its sure gonna be bird's eye-view :D Enlarged! Some internal designs.... Swedish architectural firm Tham & Videgard Hansson Arkitekter have designed a unique tree hotel that will take the tree housing concept to new heights. Way 2 go! They offer a luxurious retreat in the lap of nature, all with walls and surface reflecting the natural surroundings (this sounds WOW!). The hotel provides a small kitchen, terrace, living area and sleeping area is good enough to spend a small, or even an extended vacation, away from the hustle and bustle of crowded city life. Dunno if perching on top of the tree would become a style statement, but its sure gonna be some creative living! Tarzan would be so happy if he found out about this offer...lolz!

Nature's intricate patterns

Snowflakes form when a cloud droplet first freezes into a tiny particle of ice Came across these beautiful intricate patterns while reading something on photonics- are they not simply awesome... mother nature.. bowing to you! Microphotographic images of snowflakes capture d by California Institute of Technology physics professor Kenneth Libbrecht will appear on US postal stamps beginning this month. His research is aimed at better understanding how structures arise in material systems, but it is also visually compelling and, from the start, has been a hit with the public: Libbrecht said his Web site, www.snowcrystals.com , is getting about two million hits a year. Ah! can any jewellery designer match this beauty....? Nature's intricate patterns
