topi - a short film by Rihan

This is a lovely animation film expressing so subtly, simply and beautifully the poignance of partition. A briefing: Inspired by a true story during the partition of the Indian Empire into India and Pakistan in 1947, this piece follows Bir, a Hindu boy waiting to board a train from Pakistan to India with his mother. When a violent turn of events separates them, and he gets lost in the middle of a communal riot, Bir must find his mother before it’s too late. Directed & Animated By: Arjun Rihan Partition was so unfortunate... around a million people were killed and separated from families in the communal riots... I got totally engrossed in this simple story of a young Hindu boy who has a chance to encounter a stranger amidst the turbulent partition of India circa 1947.Loved the expressions... esp 354 - 410.. the comfort, bonding, understanding of the situation, maturity... Hats off to you Arjun!

Mike Stilkey's Whimsical Book Art

via mikeStilkey.com "The book is dying," artist Mike Stilkey reminds us. Therefore, in an effort to expose and enhance the beauty of the yellowed page and bounded form - which indeed, if Ipad and Kindle's world domination strategies succeed, will one day become simply museum memorabilia - Mike paints within books, around books, on stacks of books (which he nobly calls "book sculptures"), and even on walls lined from floor to ceiling with books. Low tech drivers with high tech cars?

Airline pilots get retrained and certified every time they move from one type of plane to another so that they can safely operate the sophisticated electronic controls in modern aircraft. Motorists expect to jump in and out of cars with minimal instruction and a cursory skim of the owner's manual. For starters, how do you even turn on one of these new cars? For decades, you did it by twisting a key, holding it for a few seconds, then releasing it as the engine kicked on. Turning the car off involved twisting it in the opposite direction. The Toyota Motor Corp. recall uproar is spurring a reevaluation of the way new automotive technology should be designed—and how much consumers should know about how it works. Features such as electronic throttle controls, computer-controlled braking, push-button "keyless" ignition systems, new transmission designs and gas-electric hybrids present challenges to drivers who are accustomed to the well-known conventions that guided the desig

a nice poem by Rumi- Masnavi

via amazon.com A nice poem by Rumi We are as the flute, and the music in us is from thee; we are as the mountain and the echo in us is from thee. We are as pieces of chess engaged in victory and defeat: our victory and defeat is from thee, O thou whose qualities are comely! Who are we, O Thou soul of our souls, that we should remain in being beside thee? We and our existences are really non-existence; thou art the absolute Being which manifests the perishable. We all are lions, but lions on a banner: because of the wind they are rushing onward from moment to moment. Their onward rush is visible, and the wind is unseen: may that which is unseen not fail from us! Our wind whereby we are moved and our being are of thy gift; our whole existence is from thy bringing into being. From the book : Teachings of Rumi (The Masnavi): The Spiritual Couplets of Jalaludin Rumi ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ What is the soul? Consciousness. The more awareness, the deeper the soul, and w
