Somehow... I have always learnt to be in and work towards a win-win situation rather than a win-lose situation.....
Felt like jotting down some thoughts which I had read a while ago....
After failing for the 2nd time, Edmund Hillary challenged Mt. Everest "I'll come again & conquer you, coz as a mountain u cant grow, but as a human I can"
(aww! leave d qoute aside.. i wanna go hiking right now :P)
I can accept failure.
Everyone fails at something...
But I can't accept not trying...
~~ Michael Jordan
The most important lesson I have learnt from sports is how not to be only a gracious winner,
but a goo loser as well.
Not everyone wins al the time, as a matter of fact.. no one wins all the time.....
Winning is the easy part,
losing is really tough.
But you learn more from one loss,
than you do from a milion wins (yups.. abs right!)
You learn a lot about sportsmanship.
I mean its really tough to shake a hand of someone who just beat you, and its even harder to do so with a smile....

That comment by late Sir Hillary has certainly been attributed to him, but it has never been conirmed, nor traced to any authentic source. MY only objection to it is that a veteran mountaineer like him could not really have challenged and taunted Mt. Everest, the Sagarmata, one of the most reverred mountains. Mountaineers are superstitous people (or used to be in the old days) and they always treated with great respect any peak that was attempted to be climbed. And this was no ordinary peak ....
ReplyDeleteAbout winning and losing at games and sports .... we all play to win, but it is even more important to play in a sportsman like manner. A favourite quote by Grantland Rice comes to mind:
"For when the One Great Scorer comes
To write against your name,
He marks-not that you won or lost-
But how you played the game."
One more quote, again from Grantland Rice, is worth penning here ... about how a person's character, his moral and physical strengths and weaknesses, show through on a golf course (or any sportsfield, for that matter):
ReplyDelete"Eighteen holes of match play will teach you more about your foe than 18 years of dealing with him across a desk."
Oh thanks :) hmmm.. i picked it up from somewhere... I liked the depth of the sentence..."I'll grow as a human being" and did not bother much about the person(s) who mentioned it:)
ReplyDeleteand thanks for those awesome quotations.... great ones!
